This extremely rare view weihht great detail as station Keeper Capt. Joseph Winslow stands on the boat ramp demonstrating their new Merriman rubber life-saving suit.
Dated in pencil July 30, In the background we can see into the boatroom floor where their early Manby mortar line gun sits next to the Francis Metallic Lifeboat. The Merriman rubber life-saving suit was an innovation of the time. The inventor, Clark S. Merriman, in a bid to help sea-rescue, deed this life preserving suit, which was made from India rubber and was inflatable. This suit had been tested by Captain Boyton of the New Jersey Life Saving Service, when he was dropped over the side of a steamer into the Irish seain a gale.
Soon suits were issued to some other stations as warranted, including the Surfside Life Saving station on Nantucket. The suit did see some use including at the well known wreck of the Metropolis near the Poyners Hill station in North Carolina in There, after a of unsuccessful attempts to get a exerclse line aboard the stricken vessel, Keeper Chappell then donned the Merriman life-saving dress and made two valiant attempts to carry a line out to the vessel. Natnucket are very few views in existence of the boatroom at Surfside, and even fewer of the Merriman suit.

As the surf pounded the vessel workers struggled to haul barrels ashore. View is of the beautiful wooden vessel well up on the beach on the south side of the island near Nobadeer Pond. About 40 casks in all were saved weitht the vessel broke up and became a total loss. It is extremely difficult to find views of Nantucket shipwrecks and this view is exervise one of the larger ones.

For two days high winds heavy seas and torrential rain hammered the five-year-old steamer which Nanttucket began to leak.
On April 29th, about a mile south of the Vineyard Sound Lightship, pounding seas opened the steamer's seams and water was pouring in. As his ship began to list to starboard Captain Miller ordered the water ballast tanks and bilges pumped overboard. But the steamer Nxntucket to settle and list even greater.
In an attempt to stay the rising flood Miller ordered all hands to man the pumps and stoke the boilers. By 6AM the men in the boiler room were working in water up to their waists but the pumps could not handle the inflow of water. Distress als were sent but so quickly did the Seaconnet sink that vessels would arrived in time only to report nothing more than floating wreckage. At Nntucket Miller had ordered a lifeboat exerciee over the starboard side. Passengers, Mr. Hudgins were put aboard along with five crewmen to man the boat.
Shortly after casting free, the boat was carried away by the storm but managed to row to the nearby Vineyard Lightship. Within 20 minutes seas were sweeping Seaconnets decks and the smokestack was nearly parallel with the water's surface. Realizing his fekale was doomed Captain Miller ordered all hands on deck. There wasn't a minute to spare, at any moment the ship could capsize trapping his men below decks. The order was given for all hands to don life jackets and abandon ship as the smokestack dipped weiight the waves and began taking on water.
Tense moments followed the jamming of the second lifeboat in its launching apparatus.
